The Golden Lens 2023 Photographic Competition
The inaugural photographic competition launched in 2022 and returned in 2023. All WA Seniors Card members were invited to enter The Golden Lens. Entries are now closed. Over 100 entries were received. The opportunity to vote for the People’s Choice Award will commence on 11 April 2023 and close on 12 May 2023. All competition winners will be announced in May 2023, and a list of winners will be shared on this webpage and the WA Seniors Card Facebook page.
The competition aims to promote ageing well by celebrating the skills of older Western Australians through the art of photography and demonstrating that people can learn and create at any age.
WA Seniors Card members love to share their stories, and other members love to hear them. Photos speak a thousand words. The Golden Lens is a wonderful opportunity for WA Seniors Card members to share photos that they have taken, that reflect the lives of Seniors and Senior’s interests across our state.
The winners and runner-up for the 2022 competition can be viewed here.

Categories
There were five categories that contestants can enter, and all submissions were asked to include a title and an Artist’s statement of 100 words or less.
Active Ageing
Seniors on the go – in the great outdoors or in an indoor setting. Wisdom, experience, sportiness, and playfulness – are just some qualities that can be portrayed in an image. Whether it’s something you’ve snapped on the spur of the moment or a more strategically composed photo, images should convey a story. What does ‘active ageing’ look like in your world?
Artistic Photography
Images may include abstract expressions, unusual close-ups, angles, patterns, motion, or perspectives, black and white photography, images created using scientific imaging tools and artistic effects from digital manipulation. Artistic images make good use of graphic elements of design. They highlight line, shape, pattern, form, texture and perspective in their subjects. This category is appropriate for digital art – images created or drastically altered in software like Adobe Photoshop®.
Diverse Cultures
Capturing culturally diverse moments in Australia, this category aims to bring what being a Western Australian means to life. Australia is a diverse, multicultural society uniting many cultures, experiences, beliefs, and traditions. From our first Australians to every culture, race, faith and nation, what makes our country so diverse?
Seniors Influencer
Have you heard of a social media influencer? Seniors can also be influencers in everyday networks. Whether it be snapping an image with your favourite brands, or demonstrations of your life hacks, social media platforms can be used to show the world what you want people to know. Judges are looking for portraits or images that promote fun and exciting moments, which persuade others to act based on your recommendation. This category is about how you would use social media to communicate visually and will require an appropriate hashtag to summarise your theme.
Flora and Fauna
Combining landscapes and natures, this category seeks images from scenes that deeply resonate with us. They may be powerful compositions free of humans and their homes or show people or animals within their landscapes. Capturing majestic animals or life-giving and nurturing aspects of mother nature at its finest, what do you love about nature? Judges will look for timing, use of colour and texture, lighting, detail and composition.
People’s Choice
Shortlisted and eligible photo entries will be available to view in a Facebook gallery post, and members of the public are encouraged to vote for the photo they like the most by Liking the individual image. The photo with the most Facebook Likes will win the People’s Choice award. Public voting will open on 11 April 2023 and close on 12 May 2023 on the WA Seniors Card Facebook Page.
